What it is

One page, once a month

Your mentee reports goals, one key number, a win, a difficulty and what they need.

When to send it

Start it in the first month

Its value is the trend, and the chart starts with the second update.

  • From the start the first month sets the baseline
  • Before each meeting read it first, then meet
  • When meetings drift back to goals and numbers

An honest frame

A habit, not a report card

Founders advised to set goals and get frequent feedback grew more (Chatterji and others, 2019).

  • Missed is allowed it is a reason to talk
  • Their key number they choose what matters
  • Same questions monthly so months compare

Reading the answers

Read the asks first

The asks show where you can help this week, so start there.

  • Goals done done, partly or missed, last month
  • Since last month the change in their key number
  • Asks what they need, in their words

Questions to ask

Ask, then ask once more

People who ask follow-up questions are liked more (Huang and others, 2017).

  • Why did the missed goals slip? then: what would you change?
  • Is this still the number that matters most? then: what would replace it?
  • Which ask can be met this week? then: who else could help?

Feedback that helps

Missed goals are information, not failure

Ask what got in the way, and keep the talk on next month.

One step

Meet one ask before the next update

An ask you meet shows up next month as a goal done.

  • Pick one ask the one you can meet
  • Set a date before the next update
  • Check it next month in the new update

After the meeting

Keep it all on Mentornity

The updates, your comments and the next steps stay in one place.
