How to send the Goal Clarity Map, read it and turn it into a goal together.

What this guide covers
What it is
From worries to one clear goal
Your mentee lists what bothers them, rates how much they control it and picks one goal.
- I hear about decisions too late
- My calendar is full of meetings
- The reorganisation
- Little time for sport
- Unclear priorities
When to send it
Send it after the first meeting
It suits the start of a programme, while the goal is still vague.
- After the first meeting it starts from what came up
- A vague goal many topics, no focus yet
- A heavy stretch to sort what is in their hands
An honest frame
Act where they have control
Act where control is high, adapt where it is low (Forsythe and Compas, 1987).
- Their list they name what weighs on them
- Control, not blame how much is in their hands
- Small parts count even a hard point has a part they can move

Look at the top right first
Points that bother a lot and sit in their hands are where to start.
- Start here bothers 4+ and control 4+
- Little control bothers a lot, hard to move
- Where it sits me, team, organisation or beyond work
Questions to ask
One question, then a follow-up
People who ask follow-up questions are liked more (Huang and others, 2017).
- Which point surprised you on the map? then: what does it tell you?
- For a point you hardly control, what small part can you influence? then: what would you try first?
- What will be different in three months? then: who would notice it first?
Feedback that helps
Talk about the map, not the person
Feedback can backfire, so keep it on the points and the goal.
Shaping the goal
Say what they want, not what stops
Approach goals are better for well-being than avoidance goals (Elliot and others, 1997).
- What they want not what they want to stop
- How they will notice a sign others can see too
- A first step below 7 out of 10 sure, make it smaller
